Anxiety and Panic Attacks

When a person has symptoms caused by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS); anxiety can occur. SNS is always active at the base level (called sympathetic tone) and becomes more active in stressful situations. A person will experience a reaction to either ’fight or flight’, the situation. Anxiety doesn’t need an outside influence to occur. Worry is often a contributor to anxiety or having the feeling of fears that are not considered rational.

Also part of the bodies response to the ’fight or flight’ reaction, is the feelings of panic. Panic is generated from the sympathetic nervous system much like anxiety however, it is initiated by external situations. Panic in general is a sudden fear that can dominate or replace our thinking. This is a stronger defense response the body has in place to help protect itself from a perceivably life threatening or harmful situation. Panic can result from an anxiety state, that a person starts to think about.

Stress symptoms are a psychosocial reaction. It’s influenced by the way a person filters nonthreatening external events. Stress can be based on the person’s assumptions, ideas and expectations. These assumptions, ideas and expectations can be referred to as social constructionist, or social constructivism is a sociological and psychological theory of knowledge that considers how social phenomena develop in particular social contexts.

The body uses both ’panic’ and ’stress’ as a natural self-defense or survival mechanism. The body defense devices will engage every time the feeling of the need to ’fight or flight’, kicks in. This is the human bodies way of preparing for a potential life threatening or dangerous situation.

However, anxiety will not only occur when a person is fearful or has a defensive mindset regarding a situation. One way you can help to alleviate some anxiety would be to remove yourself from the immediate environment, however, many people will face similar situations again and the feelings brought on by an anxiety disorder will often come back. It is not healthy to work through a situation where anxiety is the byproduct of being there and you should be careful not to remain a that type of environment situation.

To help reduce the opportunities for a panic attack to occur, you should maintain certain habits, healthy eating and regular exercise for example as well as trying to avoid situations where you may be liable to a panic episode. A quick solution is to exploit panic attack medications that are known to reduce your symptoms.

Panic attacks can be eased with the use of medication, however some are so severe that a doctor’s prescription is the only thing that will work. Herbal remedies have had a measure of success as have Homeopathic cures not just for panic attacks but for other types of depression problems including those that are stress related. Other techniques that can help you to stop a panic attack include forced muscle relaxation, yoga, music, as well as exercise.

Anti-depressants and other medication may be able to help but in the long term it is the natural methods which must be pursued as the solution to controlling panic attacks.
